Em abril de 2024, fui convidado pela ativista dos direitos humanos e da justiça social Sima Luiperta para criar uma performance juntos na Namíbia. Sima é uma sobrevivente da quarta geração do genocídio dos Nama e Ovaherero. Juntos, refletimos sobre a história da bisavó de Sima — e de muitas mulheres, em contribuição à Associação de Líderes Tradicionais Nama (NTLA), que organizou uma Caminhada em Memória do Genocídio em Shark Island, Luderitz, para homenagear as vítimas do genocídio dos povos Nama e Ovaherero de 1904-1908. Fiquei impressionado com a força de Sima diante de suas lutas contínuas, com a forma como a ilha ainda pulsa sua história horrível e também com a vivacidade e o envolvimento dos jovens nos debates. Essa Curversa reforçou meu compromisso com a criação de iniciativas educacionais e performáticas que desafiem a herança colonial, atualizem o patrimônio cultural e promovam práticas inclusivas.

In April 2024 I was invited by human rights and social justice activist Sima Luiperta to create a performance together in Namibia. Sima is a fourth generation survivor of the Nama and Ovaherero genocide. Together we reflected on the story of Sima's great-grandmother — and of many women, in contribution to The Nama Traditional Leaders Association (NTLA), who hosted a Genocide Memorial Walk at Shark Island, Luderitz, in to honor the victims of the Nama and Ovaherero Genocide of 1904-1908. I was impressed by Sima’s strength in face of their ongoing struggles, by how the island still pulses its horrific history and also by the liveness and engagement of the youth in the debates. This Curversation reinforced my commitment to crafting educational and performative initiatives that challenge colonial heritage, actualize cultural heritage and promote inclusive practices.
